If a provider group is just renting space in your hospital -based clinic, do you need to credential that group of providers? They do not use our EMR, they bill the patient themselves, provide their own assisting staff, and they schedule the patient themselves. We will check the patient in and provide a coordinator to room the patient. Does anyone have any clear literature/direction on if this group would require credentialing?
        Thanks – Stef Frank, Hutchinson

            Hi!

We run into this a lot at our facility- for most providers we do end up credentialing them, but I don’t believe that it is something we “Have” to do. Our medical staff discussed it, and we determined that we wanted to the providers credentialed so if they are here and we have a patient in our hospital/ER/nursing home that the primary MD maybe wants to bring the other provider in too see/consult- then we are free to do that and don’t have to worry about it (for example, this happens with the orthopedic provider that we have come onsite- he is renting space exactly the way you had described, but we have had several cases where a patient comes to the ER with a fracture while he is onsite, and the ER doctor will call him in for input).
            thanks!
