2025 Winner’s Circle!

NAMSS 49TH Educational Conference & Exhibition Portland, Oregon

Becky Kessler, CPCS

I cannot thank the MAMSS Board of Directors enough for the educational scholarship to attend the NAMSS conference. As I had indicated in my application letter, attending the NAMSS Conference was my biggest educational goal. Having never attended the national conference, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The conference was much more than I had envisioned. The opportunity to meet with vendors, network with others in the field, and obtain new insights into credentialing was a great experience. Meeting up with several others from Minnesota was a real treat, too.

The conference included general sessions, skill booster sessions, pop-up networking opportunities, and keynote speakers that were motivating and uplifting. For those that have not attended a national conference before, I highly recommend going. It’s an experience that I will never forget. After the conference, I took the time to review my notes and summarize everything learned and some of the important takeaways for me were that AI is here to stay, and we should be using it. Assume that your facility will be hit by a data breach and/or cybersecurity issue and plan for it. Regulatory and Government politics are driving healthcare in 2025.

Some vendors invited me to their events/dinners throughout the conference, too. I was able to attend the MD Staff Training Session on Sunday afternoon, the MD Staff 80’s Prom Party on Monday night, and the AMA Private Dinner on Tuesday night. Having never been to Portland, it was wonderful being able to see the city from my hotel room and with the convention center next to the hotel, it made attending the event very easy and convenient.

Thanks to the MAMSS leaders and members (Keri, Dani, Lexi, Jodi, Sherri, Cheri) who included me in the vendor scavenger hunt and dinner on Sunday night in the hotel.

This was truly an amazing experience, and I am so very thankful to the MAMSS board for awarding me the scholarship to attend.

In the News!

• Minnesota offers a pathway to a limited license for foreign medical graduates through recent legislation that requires an ECFMG certificate, passing parts of the USMLE, practicing medicine outside the U.S. for at least 60 months in the last 12 years, and having a job offer in a rural or underserved area under a collaborative agreement with a licensed physician. This limited license allows practice in designated areas, with the goal of eventually obtaining a full, unrestricted license after two years of practice and periodic reviews.

JC Updates:

  • Standards Receive Significant Updates

Joint Commission (JC) announced on June 30, 2025, that it is making significant updates to its standards used by hospitals and critical access hospitals to guide compliance with JC accreditation requirements and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Conditions of Participation.

The change, which consolidates and revises JC’s Life Safety and Environment of Care standards to enhance alignment with the Conditions of Participation, will necessitate careful review by EVS leaders as they strive to maintain compliance with JC accreditation requirements.

NCQA Updates:

  • Shortened Timeframes:

NCQA has reduced the timeframes for credentialing and recredentialing for both accredited and certified organizations.

  • Verification Requirements:

Organizations now need to verify Medicare and Medicaid exclusions, in addition to sanctions, within the shorter timeframes.

  • Focus on Efficiency:

These changes emphasize the need for efficient credentialing workflows and automated solutions to manage verifications and deadlines.

CMS Updates:
  • Enhanced Telehealth Credentialing:

Changes to streamline telehealth credentialing, including standardized multi-state verification and expedited onboarding.

  • Emphasis on Compliance:

These updates aim to ensure providers are licensed and authorized across state lines, and that the credentialing process is efficient for telehealth services.

Key Trends:
  • Real-time Data Sharing:
New rules require real-time data sharing to keep credentialing databases accurate and current.
  • Uniform Credentialing Criteria:
States are adopting uniform credentialing criteria and centralized platforms to reduce redundancy and expedite onboarding.
  • Focus on Patient Safety:
These changes are driven by a need to improve patient safety and provider accountability.
